Bear with me, there is a point somewhere in this post. Rarely do I play a musician’s videos twice in a row. For some reason, Jay Z‘s video “Young forever” has me thinking about growing old and dreams. Because I’m right in the middle of being young and being an older generation, go with me on this.
What do you expect out of people? They could be family, friends or people you’ve never met before. Respect comes to mind, respect for people’s boundaries, privacy, property, feelings, their past and most importantly, their dreams. No matter if you are young or old, they both demand respect from each other. Those who have walked their own path’s much longer, demand respect. Meanwhile, younger generations feel there will be no time for tomorrow may not come; their dreams are just as important.
No matter how irritating either side can get, the voices of both older and younger generations rhyme. What is a fact is how those older have earned wisdom. They have walked the walk and see both sides of life. Life becomes a coin where there are flipped sides. Their wisdom speaks for itself. On one hand, those older see how life gives second chances, the other hand; they’ve experienced time steal dreams and opportunities. Sad fact of life is how time takes away strength and energy. Nothing lives forever. Sometimes, this lesson can be forgotten, and the older make the same mistakes as those younger. Examples are how those who’ve gone before us have witnessed much failure and anxiety overcoming adversities words cannot capture. When the next opportunity arises, they insist it’s their moment and go for it. Knowing they’ve survived makes one look at life differently.
Why is it so many lose opportunities in life? This is because people weren’t prepared. They may talk the talk while in pursuit of a dream, when you don’t do the work, no matter what you say, you miss opportunities every time. This failure is why people believe if you don’t seize a chance today, tomorrow may never come. There is merit in the phrase, preparation creates opportunities. When preparation meets opportunity, it’s the recipe for success.
There are factors in life beyond our control. One’s health comes to mind. If we fail to take care of our health, opportunity can mean nothing. On the other hand, when it’s beyond our control, realities of human beings are health can take away our time. Just when we are on track to acquire our dreams, we are thrown curve balls, and our health takes our opportunities. We become distracted by what we cannot control and our health may change us forever. Easier said than done, we may have to discard dreams and create new ones. Because younger generations become so focused on tomorrow they fail to learn this lesson.
Patience, I’m repeatedly told is the name of the game. Go with me on this. Farmers come to mind. Those who endure the battles with weather and nature to grow crops and raise animals. They of all people experience losses yet manage and endure with patience. When is the last time you’ve ever seen a high-strung farmer?
How is it those older still feel young inside? They too ran for the stars only deal with the passage of time much sooner than they anticipated. Soon, those younger will have to be in the same shoes. What they wanted yesterday and today may be gone tomorrow. Lost time and opportunity is a sad reality, why does the passage of time have to stop one from their dreams?
Fuck time. I’m still going for what I wanted years ago. There is no doubt in my mind I will win it.
